This is a free knitting pattern.
176 yards bulky weight yarn
130 yards sport weight yarn
(Shown in 1 skein Noro Kochoran and 1 skein Frog Tree Alpaca yarns.)(We no longer carry Noro Kochoran yarn.)

Size 10.5 US needles, 16" circular and DP (adult hat)

Hold one strand of bulky yarn and one strand of sport weight yarn together for entire project.

Abbreviations
Main round: (P2, K3, P2, K4) repeat to end of round.
Cable round: (P2, K3, P2, C2B) repeat to end of round.
C2B: move next two stitches to a cable needle, hold to the back of work. Knit 2 stitches from left hand needle, then knit 2 stitches from cable needle.

Instructions
Cast on 66 stitches. Place marker and join into a round, being careful not to twist. Work 3 main rounds (see above for abbreviations.) Work 1 cable round.
Now work 4 main rounds and 1 cable round. Repeat these 5 rounds until your work measures 7" – 8" (adult).

Decreases: decreases will be worked in the following order: in the purl sections, in the rib sections, and finally in the cable sections. At this point you may or may not be able to fit in one more cable round. Continuing in the established rib and cable pattern, work the following decrease rounds:
Dec 10 stitches by P2tog in each purl section. (54 st)
Work in established pattern with no decreases – remember – your P2 is now a P1.
Dec 6 stitches by (K2tog, K1) in each rib section (where you previously worked a K3). Do NOT decrease any stitches in the cable section. (48 st)
Dec 6 stitches by K2tog in each remaining rib section. (42 st)
Dec 6 stitches by (K1, K2tog, K1) in each cable section. (36 st)
Dec 6 stitches by (K2tog, K1) in each remaining cable section. (30 st)
Dec 6 stitches by K2tog in each remaining cable section. (24 st)
Dec 12 stitches by K2tog around. (12 st)
Cut yarn leaving an 8" tail and pull through remaining stitches. Weave in ends.
